DÉMARCHE ARTISTIQUE / ARTIST STATEMENT
Dans l’ensemble, mon travail consiste en une évaluation subjective du monde qui m’entoure, de près et de loin. L’utilisation de média simples me permet d’exprimer les préoccupations d’un individu ordinaire dans un monde parfois difficile à comprendre et à accepter. Ma production artistique me sert d’outil pour la revendication tranquille du statut de la personne moyenne, et de sa légitime importance dans une société qui ne s’intéresse qu’aux coups d’éclat.
La noblesse du geste quotidien, l’abrutissement par surconsommation, le culte du superficiel et la marginalisation du monde de l’art ont été et demeurent des thèmes omniprésents.
Mes œuvres prennent généralement la forme d’installations et d’assemblages, les techniques et matériaux étant choisis pour leur pertinence et leur utilité à servir le sujet traité. Ainsi, les techniques désuètes de la broderie et des travaux d’aiguille viendront incarner la simplicité et l’intimité du quotidien, tandis qu’une réflexion sur la surconsommation fera appel à des objets et à des stratégies empruntées au commerce et à l’industrie. À tout moment, le regardeur se retrouve pris à partie dans cette œuvre qui, tout en étant profondément conceptuelle, s’exprime dans une flagrante matérialité.

In a broad sense, the sum of my work amounts to a subjective assessment of my immediate surroundings. It evokes the fleeting and the mundane, the little moments and simple thoughts that often get lost in an otherwise overpowering and frantic life. I use my artistic practice as a discrete means to reclaim status in the name of ordinary folk, and to reinstate our importance in a society that seems to only notice the bold and the vociferous.
For the most part, my statements are expressed in assemblage pieces and installations which are freely associative, emotionally charged, and sensually designed. Frequently visited themes include the beauty and dignity of the quotidian, the deplorable ruling of commerce over common sense and human values, the status of art and of artists inside and outside of the art world and, more formally, the relationships and intersections between words, visuals and meanings; a natural focus, given my past as a parliamentary translator, and my ongoing involvement with the literary scene.
Careful consideration is given to the inclusion of the viewer in this conversation, in which my part is expressed in lush visuals and extreme materiality.
