In the summer of 2018, my dearest and most ambitious artistic project to date found itself censored beyond recognition by an eleventh hour administrative decision from the host gallery.
The project was meant to denounce the commodification of artists (not just their art) in an artworld which was built from the noble intention of legitimizing art as a worthy social endeavor, but sadly overshot the mark by becoming itself a rigid, controlling institution.
French Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle had been identified as a pertinent subject for a case-study in the form of visual essay. An elaborate installation, eight years in gestation and two-years in the making, was cut short by a questionable decision to ask for the blessing of the Riopelle estate when the work was ready to be installed. With a mere two-month turnaround time, the exhibition had to be completely rethought and remade, its initial intent being obliterated in the process. This abrupt change of course gave rise to a symbolic clearance sale installation entitled “Everything must go / Liquidation totale”.

Au cours de l’été 2018, mon projet le plus ambitieux et le plus chéri tombait sous le couperet d’une décision administrative prise à minuit moins une par la galerie-hôte, qui allait le défigurer au-delà de toute reconnaissance.
Le projet voulait attirer l’attention sur l’utilisation des artistes (et non seulement de leur art) comme capital économique et académique, dans un monde de l’art qui a depuis longtemps délaissé ses bonnes intentions au profit de sa propre survie.
La carrière de l’artiste-vedette Jean-Paul Riopelle avait été choisie comme modèle pour une étude de cas, formulée en langage visuel. Un travail ambitieux, issu d’une gestation de huit ans et le fruit de deux ans de production laborieuse, anéanti par la décision in extremis de la galerie de consulter la succession Riopelle alors que l’œuvre était prête à installer. À deux mois du vernissage, l’exposition a dû être complètement repensée et remaniée, donnant lieu à une installation symboliquement intitulée “Everything must go / Liquidation totale”.
